Is Fat Transfer Surgery Safe?

There are times when certain parts of your body could lose volume or have wrinkles that are becoming more visible due to the skin losing fat and elasticity. Fat transfer surgery is one of the surgical remedies to smooth wrinkles and restore volume. In this procedure, fat is removed from other areas of your body through liposuction and then injected into problem areas. The fat comes from your thighs, buttocks, or abdomen, so you do not have to worry about incompatibility or contracting diseases from anonymous donors, making fat transfer surgery safe. In fact, it can be a safer and a better alternative to conventional fillers because it lasts longer and it can be used for many different procedures.

Fat transfer surgery is typically conducted as a day case. Local anaesthesia is used before the surgeon makes small incisions to allow liposuction tubes to gain access to the fat. Small incisions are used to re-inject your fat into a graft area.  Antibiotics will be prescribed after surgery to help reduce your risk for infections. Likewise, the cosmetic surgeon may prescribe a mild painkiller, in case you experience any kind of discomfort. Swelling and bruising may occur, but they should go away after a week or so.

While fat transfer surgery is safe, there are certain things you must do to ensure the success of the procedure and the best results. For starters, be sure to let only a qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon conduct the procedure. Take the prescribed antibiotics and avoid strenuous exercise for at least two weeks. You may go back to work after a few days, but avoid doing strenuous physical activities. The surgeon will remove your stitches after five days to a week. When considering fat transfer surgery, keep in mind that the chances of the fat cells surviving for a long time will be better if the surgeon can put very small amounts of fat at a time. Hence, multiple sessions may be scheduled to achieve the best results.
